Frequently Asked Questions

Check in is between 4pm and 8pm on weekdays, 2pm and 6pm at weekends. If you intend to arrive outside these hours, you should contact us beforehand and there may be an additional charge. Checkout from glamping tents is 11am and from the site is 2pm. We ask campers to clear their pitches for incoming guests by 12 noon. Guests are welcome to use the facilities on site until they leave.

As an eco-site we use composting loos to conserve water. They rely on separation of liquid and solid waste 'at source' so look a little different to a standard loo. People can be nervous the first time but its simple to use a composting loo and if you follow these easy tips the process works perfectly and the loos remain smell free.

• Always sit down in the loo (regardless of what you are doing and your gender!)
• Advise children to sit well back to poo so it goes down the appropriate hole
• Nothing but pee, poo and paper down the loo
• Bins are provided for sanitary products and nappies only
• Keep the loo seat closed when not in use

If you have any questions about the loos please do ask – we talk about poo a lot!

We have recently upgraded our highly efficient solar showers so we can provide a hot shower whatever the weather. For water conservation we do encourage staggering showering in your group so not everyone is trying to shower at the same time, making your shower short and sweet or sharing with a friend! Please wash off as much of Lunan Bay under the cold tap as you can before getting in!

There is a small amount of solar lighting on site but we recommend you bring a torch. Please note there is no electric hook up on any of the pitches. Phone charging is available in the Field Kitchen.

We love dogs here at Greenhillock. Home hound Logan loves to make new friends (as does interloper from next door Sam, who has everyone convinced he is the resident campsite dog). Dogs are free of charge. We simply ask that they are picked up after and under control at all times. If you are glamping with us please do keep four legged friends off beds and sofas.

Nothing completes a camping trip like a proper campfire and it's an essential part of the Greenhillock experience. We rely on guests being responsible with their campfires and following these guidelines so we can continue to allow them.

• Each camping pitch features a firepit dug into the ground. Please don't light fires anywhere other than these pits.
• Be mindful of the position of the firepits when pitching your tent and leave a suitable gap.
• 'Glampers' are provided with a fire bowl on their deck for their open fire.
• The bell tents are treated with fire retardant but will still scorch and burn if hit with sparks. As well as being dangerous, spark and ember damage to the tent or deck will be charged so be mindful of wind direction and control your fire!
• Put out your fire and check it is fully extinguished before going to bed.
• Never leave your fire unattended.
• Do not light fires on very windy days and do not allow your fire to become out of control or spark excessively.
• Use water to damp down any out of control fire / sparks.
• There are sand buckets marked with red poles at various points around the site and a fire blanket in the Field Kitchen.
• Take a moment to check where these are when you arrive.
• If you need to use a fire bucket, please let a member of the team know as soon as possible so it can be filled up.

Sustainably sourced firewood, kindling and charcoal are all available to buy from us. Only use logs purchased from us, or fuel you bring with you, on your fires. Please do not take wood from the den building area or neighbouring private woodland to use as fuel.

You are advised to use stoves outside and well away from any tent material. The use of stoves and candles is not permitted inside the bell tents. Please use the outdoor area for cooking or the Field Kitchen in inclement weather. Never leave flames unattended and extinguish them when going to bed. A fire will take hold very, very quickly in a tent so great care must be taken at all times.

Due to irresponsible disposal in the past, we no longer permit disposable BBQs at Greenhillock. You are welcome to use the communal BBQs in the West End or bring your own camp BBQ and take it home when you leave.

Greenhillock is located between Forfar and Dundee off the A90 via the B9127. The postcode for satnav is DD8 2NL. The postcode stops slightly short of us so carry on over the railway bridge. The road turns sharply to the right and to the left there is a track signposted Greenhillock Glamping and a wind turbine you can't miss. Take this left and follow it to the first house you come to. The site is through the gate on your right.

The pitches are car-free with parking in an adjacent area. Jazzy wheelbarrows will help you get stuff to your pitch. This is both to protect the meadows and make the site safe for children. Car parking is very limited so please park sensibly. If you need to bring multiple vehicles per pitch, please tell us when you book so we can arrange alternative parking. We will do our best to accommodate any special mobility needs especially if you can tell us in advance. We offer paid for charging for electric vehicles.

We welcome our guests exploring the meadows and wildlife pond. We ask that you are light-footed in the meadows and generally stick to the paths unless there's something in particular you wish to look at. The den building area and picnic area by the field kitchen are available for rough and tumble!

We provide basic scientific equipment for mini beast hunting and pond dipping. A small deposit is taken to ensure equipment is returned. Do make sure any creatures are returned to where you found them and be alert to underwater animals running out of oxygen - try not to keep them in small magnifiers for too long. Please do not take creatures back to your tent.

The pond in the South Paddock is a great spot for pond dipping or quiet reflection. However, it is deep so we have restricted access with gates. Be mindful and close the gates behind you so little people cannot find their way to the water alone. Please ensure children are supervised or understand how to be safe by the water. There are pontoons for pond dipping and we advise the pond is only accessed at these points. Swimming and wading in the pond is not permitted.

There is a pond on the private land adjacent to the site accessed by a gate in the Home Paddock. The pond is very deep so please do not allow children to access this pond.

Please separate food waste, glass, mixed recycling and general waste. Batteries, BBQs and gas canisters are not permitted in any of the bins. Please consider taking bulky items such as mattresses and camp chairs home as disposing of them incurs charges which we have to pass on via our pitch pricing.
